シジウィックが定義している述語を取り上げて整理する。
私は「命令」という語を後に言及する(第2節)次のような見解を含むものとして使ってきた。すなわち、究極的に妥当な道徳的命法は特定の行為と関わっていると考えるような見解である。
LET, then, pleasure be defined as feeling which the sentient individual at the time of feeling it implicitly or explicitly apprehends to be desirable; -- desirable, that is, when considered merely as feeling, and not in respect of its objective conditions or consequences, or of any facts that come directly within the cognisance and judgment of others besides the sentient individual. And let it be provisionally assumed that feelings generally can be compared from this point of view, with sufficient definiteness for practical purposes, and empirically known to be more or less pleasant in some definite degree.
さて、快楽とは、暗示的にであれ明示的にであれそれを感じている時点での感覚的な個体が望ましいと理解するような感情だと定義しよう。望ましいとは、つまり、たんに感情としてだけ考察されたときにということであって、その感情の客観的条件や帰結の点からとか、その感覚的な個体以外の他人の認識や判断に直接入ってくるような事実の点からということではない。また、一般に感情はこの観点から実際の目的のためには十分明確に比較することができ、多かれ少なかれ何らかの明確な程度で快いと経験的に知ることができると暫定的に想定しよう。
